A red-fleshed citrus fruit with an orange rind, the grapefruit is native to South-East Asia and was introduced to Europe in the 17th century. It belongs to the Citrus genus, like the orange and the lemon.
Grapefruit contains vitamin C, which is an antioxidant and beneficial for the immune system. This fruit is particularly well known for its cardiovascular benefits. Grapefruit peel also contains bioflavonoids, such as hesperidin and naringin. These two molecules have a prebiotic role that helps the bacteria of the microbiota to proliferate, among which are those capable of producing butyrate.
Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) involved in the synthesis of mucus, a viscous fluid that protects the intestinal mucosa. Mucus prevents the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria to intestinal cells. Mucus and the intestine are considered to be a defence barrier for the immune system. Grapefruit is therefore beneficial to both the immune and digestive systems.
The bioflavonoids in grapefruit help maintaining intestinal health and having a beneficial effect on immunological protection. The gut is the most important part of the immune system. As such, it is important to take care of it.
