CITRUS

Description

The term "citrus" refers to trees that produce citrus fruit. Citrus trees belong to the Rutaceae family.

This is particularly the case for trees producing bitter orange (Citrus aurantium), bergamot (Citrus bergamia), lemon (Citrus x lime) or orange (Citrus sinensis) and yuzu, whose Latin name is more complicated (Citrus ichangensis × Citrus reticulata var. austera).

These fruits contain vitamin C, but also polyphenols, the main representatives of which in citrus fruits belong to a subgroup of flavonoids called flavanones, including naringin, hesperidin and eriocitrine.

Flavanones have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system and have a vasodilating effect. They are also antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and reduce blood sugar levels in insulin-resistant diabetes. (Calderone V. and Testai L., 2017).

Benefits

  • A source of polyphenols, citrus fruits have a protective effect on the cardiovascular system.
