Dopamine is a neurotransmitter synthesised by certain nerve cells from tyrosine, an amino acid (a component of dietary proteins); it enables communication within the nervous system and has a direct influence on behaviour. The brain's dopaminergic networks are closely associated with exploratory behaviour, alertness, pleasure seeking and active avoidance of punishment (running away or fighting). Dopamine also plays a driving role in motivation and decision-making. It is associated with the search for pleasure or emotions, alertness and sexual desire. Conversely, when the synthesis or release of dopamine is disrupted or decreased, demotivation and moodiness may appear.
