Coenzyme Q10 is an antioxidant present throughout the body, particularly in the heart, in the mucous membranes of the gums and stomach, liver, kidneys, prostate... It protects the body from damage caused by free radicals (oxidative stress). Cholesterol and coenzyme Q10 are both produced naturally by the liver and share the same biochemical processes. Therefore, by reducing the synthesis of cholesterol (via statins, for example), the production of coenzyme Q10 is also blocked, hence the need for supplementation in these cases.
