Description

The mitochondrial function evolves throughout life and can be progressively impacted by physiological ageing as well as by various environmental and behavioural factors. The clinical studies available on PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) as a dietary supplement have mainly evaluated a dose of 20 mg per day, administered for 8 to 12 weeks. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study notably used 20 mg/day for 12 weeks and observed effects on certain parameters of cognitive function (Nakano et al., 2012). Other clinical studies have evaluated 20 mg/day for 8 weeks, with observations on fatigue, stress and sleep quality (Harris et al., 2013).

Mechanistic research also suggests a potential role of PQQ in mitochondrial biogenesis and in supporting cellular energy metabolism (Akagawa et al., 2016), which explains its interest in nutritional strategies focused on mitochondrial vitality.
