    Umbrella Polypore (Polyporus umbellatus), also called Zhu Ling in Asian tradition, is a rare mushroom that grows at the base of trees, such as beeches and oaks, and is often partially buried in the soil of forests and undergrowth. This mushroom forms large branched clusters composed of hundreds of small cream-colored caps (pileus) arranged in umbels, connected to a branched central stem. Its spectacular silhouette, which can reach up to 50 cm in diameter, gives it a singular and unmistakable appearance. Moreover, in traditional symbolism, its umbels evoke a sense of protection, similar to a natural shelter.

    Since Umbrella Polypore is extremely difficult to find, it was considered a true forest treasure. Its discovery was so rare that it was perceived as a sign of luck and prosperity for the one who found it. It is precisely this rarity that, in Imperial China, earned this mushroom a place among the offerings destined for the court, alongside other prestigious plants and mushrooms reserved for the elite.

    Each small cap, a few centimeters in diameter, increases the contact surface of this mushroom with its environment, thus promoting the accumulation of bioactive molecules.     Expertise from harvest to extract

    After harvesting, the mushrooms are immediately dried under optimal conditions to preserve their quality. Once hand-checked, only those with flawless quality are selected and allowed to be transformed into powder, then into standardized extract with titrated active molecules.

    After drying, the fruiting bodies of the mushrooms are ground into a very fine powder using the so-called “shellbroken” method, which mechanically breaks the cell walls of the mushroom to release all its active compounds and optimize their bioavailability.

    The extraction of Polypore active compounds is then carried out without organic solvents. Our extracts are obtained through aqueous extraction, during which ground mushrooms are decocted for several hours at a controlled temperature, without boiling. This gentle method helps to preserve the structure of the mushroom’s active molecules.

    This step requires true technical expertise. Indeed, each fungal species requires specific time and temperature parameters to optimally release its compounds of interest, particularly polysaccharides.

    Analysis and traceability: controlled mushrooms
