Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus), also known as “butcher’s holly”, is a perennial plant that grows in Mediterranean undergrowth and shaded areas of Europe.

Easily recognizable by its small, rigid leaves and its bright red berries, it has been used since Antiquity in traditional medicines for its rhizomes, that is to say its underground roots, which concentrate a major natural active compound: ruscogenin. Butcher’s broom was already mentioned in Greek and Roman herbal medicine treatises, and its young shoots, similar to asparagus, were sometimes consumed in local cuisine. Its slightly bitter taste also made it an occasional ingredient in popular decoctions or infusions.
