Oregano (Origanum vulgare), a characteristic aromatic plant of the Mediterranean regions, has been recognized since antiquity for its botanical richness. The flowering aerial parts are harvested at maturity and then dried to preserve the integrity of the naturally occurring compounds. Berberis aristata DC., also known as "Himalayan barberry," is a spiny shrub from the Berberidaceae family, native to mountainous regions of Asia. In traditional herbal medicine, primarily the roots are used. They are rich in berberine, a bright yellow isoquinoline alkaloid naturally present in the root bark. The extract used in quality formulations is standardized in berberine to ensure a consistent and reproducible concentration.
