Vegetable charcoal is obtained by burning vegetable matter such as walnut shells. It is burned again at very high temperatures to increase its porous surface and make it active. This gives it a high adsorption capacity and makes it a natural filter. Its adsorbent capacity is conferred by its structure. One gram of powdered activated vegetable carbon has an adsorption surface area of between 400 and 2500 m², which enables it to adsorb about 100 times its volume.
