Description

Carotenoids are natural, fat-soluble pigments synthesized by plants, certain algae, bacteria, and microorganisms. In humans, they are obtained exclusively through diet and are found in numerous tissues, particularly in the skin, nervous system, and ocular tissues. More than 600 carotenoids have been identified in nature, but only a few are found in significant amounts in the human body, including lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene, β-carotene, and astaxanthin.

Physiologically, carotenoids are distinguished by their ability to interact with cell membranes due to their structure rich in conjugated double bonds. The retina, and more specifically the macula, is subject to intense metabolic activity as well as continuous light exposure. This combination promotes the production of reactive oxygen species and explains the physiologically high presence of certain carotenoids in these tissues.

  • Tagetes erecta (flower) extract standardized in lutein and zeaxanthin contributes to the improvement of visual acuity (authorized health claim). These carotenoids are naturally concentrated in the macula.

Natural AstaReal® astaxanthin, derived from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, is studied for its high antioxidant activity. To date, no specific health claim has been validated for astaxanthin in Europe. Available data are based on clinical and experimental studies, to be interpreted within the framework of an appropriate nutritional approach.
