The only surviving species of the very old ginkgoaceae family, the Ginkgo biloba almost disappeared during the last great glaciations, the last of which, named Würm, dates back to 70,000 years BC. It is the oldest known family of trees, having appeared more than 270 million years ago.
Having survived in Asia, it was replanted in Europe around 1720, and after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was the first species to regrow the following year, proving its phenomenal resistance to environmental stresses. The ginkgo is a medium to large tree that can reach heights of 20 to 30 metres. Its lifespan is very important, with the one in the University Botanical Garden at Tōhoku being more than 1,250 years old today.
