Astaxanthin
Description
Astaxanthin is a red-orange pigment belonging to the carotenoid family.
Its antioxidant power would be 6,000 times more important than that of vitamin C. Astaxanthin traps free radicals, thus protecting cells against oxidative stress, responsible for cell aging.
This pigment is originally synthesized by unicellular red algae such as Haematococcus pluvialis. Astaxanthin can represent up to 6% of the total weight of these micro-algae and serves as a protective shield against sunlight and UV rays responsible for DNA damage.
In the human body, this antioxidant is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and thus act at the level of the brain, which it helps to protect against neuronal inflammation. Astaxanthin also has a protective action on the eyes and against skin aging. Its properties allow to improve physical performances, in particular strength, endurance and recovery after the effort.
