Fucosyllactose

Description

2'-fucosyllactose, also called 2'-FL, is an oligosaccharide found in abundance in breast milk. This sugar derived from lactose is not digestible by the organism but corresponds on the other hand to a prebiotic fiber which ensures a good diversity of the microbiota.

Indeed, 2'FL directly influences the colonization of the intestine by different species of bacteria.

The gene named FUT2 codes for an enzyme, called α1,2 fucosyltransferase, which allows the production of 2'-fucosyllactose.

This enzyme is involved in the functioning of mucus-producing epithelial cells whose role is to protect the mucous membranes. For about 20% of the population, this enzyme is in deficit. The 2'-fucosyllactose is then not secreted. The mucus then becomes porous and thin, and no longer plays its protective role. This is a risk factor for allergies, chronic infections, diabetes, digestive disorders and creates an imbalance in the microbiota.

The benefits

2'-fucosyllactose supports and develops the intestinal microbiota and immunity. This sugar helps limit the risk of infection due to pathogens, which makes this oligosaccharide a good nutritional accompaniment to reduce the risk of infection, since it helps strengthen the immune system, combined with anti-inflammatory properties.
