Description

Molybdenum is an essential trace element, present in very small amounts in the body, but playing a key role in the metabolism of sulphur-containing amino acids such as methionine and cysteine. It therefore contributes to maintaining the normal metabolism of these compounds, which is essential for many biological functions. It is a cofactor for four major enzymes — sulphite oxidase, xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase and the mARC metalloenzyme.

From a physiological perspective, sulphite oxidase plays a crucial role in converting sulphites — naturally present in certain foods or added as preservatives — into sulphates, molecules that are well tolerated by the body.

Xanthine oxidase, for its part, is an enzyme that converts certain substances resulting from the breakdown of our DNA into uric acid, a compound naturally present in the body. It is an important antioxidant in blood plasma, while also preventing the accumulation of toxic intermediate metabolites. Aldehyde oxidase, meanwhile, contributes to the breakdown of certain endogenous substances and xenobiotics (compounds foreign to the body, such as certain medicines).
