Intrinsic factor

Description

Discovered by William Bosworth Castle who gave it its name, intrinsic factor, or Castle's factor, is a glycoprotein that promotes intestinal absorption of vitamin B12.

 

Intrinsic factor is encoded by the GIF (Gastric Intrinsic Factor) gene, located on chromosome 11, and is secreted by the cells of the stomach lining.
