Lycopene is a natural pigment belonging to the carotenoid family, compounds widely found in the plant kingdom. Lycopene is attracting increasing scientific interest and has been the subject of numerous research publications. This molecule is mainly present in tomatoes, giving them their characteristic red color. Like other carotenoids, such as beta-carotene (a precursor of vitamin A, also called pro-vitamin A), lutein, zeaxanthin, astaxanthin, phytoene, or phytofluene, lycopene is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves in fats.

The lycopene content varies depending on the form in which the tomato is consumed. Processing methods, particularly cooking, lead to a higher concentration of lycopene, as in tomato sauce. The addition of fats during culinary preparation also contributes to this concentration, in line with lycopene’s fat-soluble nature. Thus, by weight, tomato sauce generally provides more lycopene than raw tomatoes.

Despite this increased concentration in certain foods, dietary intake of lycopene often remains variable and sometimes insufficient compared to levels typically mentioned in the scientific literature. In nutrition, commonly cited intakes are generally around 15 mg per day, amounts that can be difficult to achieve regularly through diet alone, depending on eating habits and the frequency of consuming lycopene-rich products. This is why supplementation may be necessary.

Laboratoire Therascience selected the standardized tomato extract Lycomato6™, which concentrates the power of 4 carotenoids (lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene, and beta-carotene), as well as vitamin E, which helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

These molecules work synergistically to provide enhanced benefits and overall efficacy. Phytoene and phytofluene are “early” carotenoids and play a role in the synthesis of other carotenoids.

Optimal dosage to meet nutritional needs

Each capsule of PHYSIOMANCE^® Lycopène contains 15 mg of lycopene, an amount suited to daily needs. This optimal dose is equivalent to 500–600 g of fresh tomatoes, which corresponds to 3–4 tomatoes with an average lycopene content of 2.5–3 mg per 100 g.

Additionally, a daily intake of 15 mg of lycopene corresponds to about 100–150 g of tomato sauce, which represents 7–10 tablespoons per day. Such intakes can be difficult to achieve daily through diet alone.
