Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by dysfunction of the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS). The poor closure of this sphincter is responsible for the backflow of gastric juice into the oesophagus, which is then exposed to the acidity of the gastric fluid and to numerous enzymes such as pepsin, which is involved in the breakdown of proteins. This causes an unpleasant sensation of "heartburn". To remedy this problem, the combination of alginate, lithothamnium and chamomile matricaria ensures the creation of a barrier limiting reflux; it decreases acidity at the gastric and oesophageal level, and inhibits the action of pepsin while exercising an anti-inflammatory action to protect the oesophagus.
