Did you know it ?
Pterostilbene is a powerful antioxidant belonging to the large family of polyphenols. It is mainly present in blueberries and bilberries. It is also found, albeit in smaller quantities, in almonds, grapes and kino (Pterocarpus marsupium), a tree endemic to Malabar. Among plants, pterostilbene plays a protective role against microbes (viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc.) and excess UV radiation. It has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine as a heart tonic and against diabetes. In addition, it is attributed many complementary virtues on immunity, cognitive functions and ageing. Although its polyphenolic structure is close to that of resveratrol, pterostilbene has two methoxy groups instead of hydroxyl groups, a structural difference that gives it greater bioavailability: it is absorbed more easily (95% compared to 20% for resveratrol) and remains present in the body for longer1.
