Metabolites of the microbiota are molecules produced by the bacteria of the microbiota in the presence of dietary fibre, also known as prebiotics. These fibres are fermented by enzymes possessed by our bacteria and are used as an energy source by these bacteria. The bacteria then produce metabolites: postbiotics. Metabolites of the microbiota can be peptides, but also short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), such as butyrate. These metabolites serve both the bacteria of the microbiota and the host cells (us), which benefit from them: a perfect illustration of the close relationship between the host and the microbiota.
These metabolites have a beneficial role for the body. Butyrate has a particular effect on colonic health and is a nutritional aid in cases of diverticulosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and a history of Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease (CIBD), excluding relapses.
