Description

Dry skin most often results from an imbalance in the skin barrier, the body’s first line of defence against external aggressors. This barrier, also known as the epidermal barrier, consists of a protective hydrolipidic film and the stratum corneum, rich in ceramides and essential fatty acids such as omega 3, 6, 7 and 9. When this structure becomes weakened, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) increases, leading to skin dehydration, tightness, redness and greater sensitivity to allergens and pollutants. 

A defective skin barrier is a central mechanism in many dermatological conditions such as atopic eczema or psoriasis, where chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and a deficiency in skin lipids aggravate dryness and scaling. The skin then becomes vulnerable, with a decrease in its protective function and an alteration of the skin microbiota. 

In women, the menopause period accentuates this phenomenon: the decrease in oestrogen reduces the production of collagen, elastin and lipids, which affects not only skin hydration and firmness, but also the health of the mucous membranes. Vaginal or oral dryness, often reported during this period, is therefore closely linked to the loss of integrity of the epithelial barrier

Evening primrose oil: a precious oil rich in omega 6 and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)

Evening primrose oil, obtained from the seeds of Oenothera biennis, is a precious plant oil whose use dates back several centuries. Native to North America, evening primrose was nicknamed the “woman’s plant” by Native American populations, who traditionally used it to prepare remedies. Introduced into Europe in the 17th century as an ornamental plant, it quickly attracted interest for its lipid-rich seeds, giving rise to an oil that is now essential in nutricosmetics and food supplements. 

From a nutritional perspective, evening primrose oil is recognised for its exceptional richness in essential fatty acids. In particular, it contains a high proportion of omega 6, including gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an important precursor of ceramides and other lipids that form part of the epidermal barrier. In addition to GLA, evening primrose oil also provides omega 3, omega 7 and omega 9, making it a complete plant oil.

Argan oil: a rare plant oil, rich in omega 6 and omega 9

Argan oil, extracted from the kernels of Argania spinosa, is a precious plant oil native to Morocco. It stands out for its high content of omega 6 and omega 9, two fatty acids that form an essential part of its lipid profile.

Omega 9, mainly represented by oleic acid, belongs to the family of monounsaturated fatty acids. Oleic acid can be transformed in the body into various lipid derivatives, including cholesteryl esters and membrane phospholipids, which contribute to the fluidity and organisation of lipid bilayers. This richness in oleic acid, combined with the other lipids present in argan oil, makes it a unique, rare and sought-after raw material, traditionally used in the field of natural cosmetics.

Borage oil: a natural source of omega 6 and GLA

Borage oil, extracted from the seeds of Borago officinalis, is recognised for its exceptional richness in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a rare omega 6, but also for its complete composition of omega 3 and omega 9. Omega 3, represented in particular by alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), belongs to the family of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

From a biochemical perspective, ALA can undergo a series of enzymatic desaturations and elongations in the liver, leading to the formation of longer-chain fatty acids such as EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Omega 3 fatty acids are then incorporated into various lipid complexes, such as membrane phospholipids, triglycerides or cholesteryl esters.

Thanks to this unique lipid profile, combining GLA, omega 3 and omega 9, borage oil retains a privileged place, linking tradition and modernity through the quality of its essential fatty acids.

Sea buckthorn oil: an oil rich in omega 7 and natural carotenoids

Sea buckthorn oil, obtained from the berries of Hippophae rhamnoides, is remarkable for its content of omega 7, a rare fatty acid found in few traditional plant oils. It also contains other essential fatty acids and a wide diversity of natural carotenoids, responsible for its characteristic orange colour. 

From a biochemical perspective, carotenoids belong to the family of fat-soluble pigments derived from isoprenoids. They include compounds such as beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene. These molecules can be incorporated into cell membranes. Certain carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, are also precursors of bioactive molecules such as vitamin A, through specific enzymatic transformations (central cleavage by beta-carotene-15,15’-monooxygenase). 

This rare combination of omega 7, essential fatty acids and natural carotenoids gives sea buckthorn oil a unique and sought-after profile. 

 

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10): a key natural antioxidant, produced by fermentation

Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10, is an essential endogenous molecule, naturally produced by the body and involved in cellular processes. In DERMASSENTIEL® NUTRIDERM, it is provided in a natural form obtained through fermentation, ensuring optimal quality and purity. 

It should be noted that oxidative stress particularly affects the skin, an organ exposed daily to external aggressors such as pollution, UV rays, tobacco and environmental stress. The accumulation of free radicals in the epidermis and dermis can disrupt the oxidative balance of skin cells and weaken their lipid and protein structures. Coenzyme Q10 acts as one of the basic elements of the body’s defence against free radicals.
