Cotinus coggygria, also known as the smoke tree or Venetian sumac, is a woody shrub of the Anacardiaceae family. Native to the temperate regions of southern Europe and western Asia, it is found in particular on sunny limestone soils, often on hillsides, forest edges or Mediterranean scrublands. It is distinguished by its light green oval leaves, turning purple-red in autumn, and above all by its feathery, pinkish inflorescences, from which it derives its nickname “smoke tree”.

Historically, Cotinus coggygria has been used in plant dyeing for its high concentration of coloring flavonoids present in its wood and bark, but also in traditional medicine, notably for local use on mucous membranes or skin conditions.

The major interest of this extract today lies in its richness in fisetin, a natural flavonoid also found in trace amounts in certain fruits (strawberry, apple, persimmon), but in very low concentration.
